by Craig Whitlock

The 405 Freeway underpass at Santa Monica Blvd. closes  between 9PM and 6AM for three nights starting tonight.  Apparently, the north and soutbound on-ramps to the freeway will also be closed.  The work is part of Metro's I-405 widening project and the targeted section spans between Beloit Ave. on the West and Cotner Ave. on the East.

Magnet School Registration Deadline Approaching

by Craig Whitlock

The magnet school program (now totaling 173) of the Los Angeles Unified School District has moved up their application deadline this year by three weeks to December 18th.  Last year, the deadline was January 9th and the advanced deadline means parents can find out as soon as April whether their applicaton for a particular magnet school has been accepted.

Current enrollment stands at nearly 57,000 students and only 1 in 4 applications are accepted each year from the 65,000 applications submitted.  Thus, right now is a great time to take action if this program is one you might be considering.  For more information, you can log on to:

The Barrington Recreation Center Has Something For The Whole Family

by Craig Whitlock

Many know it just as 'The Tennis Courts on Barrington' - an apt description considering the limited view from the street when driving by.  If you were to park and look a little closer, you'd find that the Barrington Recreation Center (located at 333 South Barrington Avenue just below Sunset Blvd.) in Brentwood is a full-spectrum recreational resource for all ages.  It's operated by the city's Department of Recreation and Parks and offers a well-rounded menu of sports and events including:

Tennis (4 Courts free of charge) - from Beginner to Advanced

Youth Classes - from Soccer Clinics to Skateboarding to Basketball

Girls Baseball and Flag Football

Co-ed Baseball and Flag Football

Dog and Puppy Training Classes (plus Companion Dog Training)

Basketball Camp (ages 9-16)

Parent and Me Classes

Senior/Adult Classes - from Bridge to Yoga to Physical Firtness

It's been there ever since I can remember (and that's a long time) and has slowly evolved over the years.  There is however, an effort underway by the Friends of Barrington Recreation Center to further elevate it to a 'state-of-the-art recreational facility that will serve the community for generations to come'.  They could use your support and those interested should check out the site for more details about this and all of the team/event sign-up information.  Even if you reside in Westwood or Pacific Palisades, this is a family-fun resource that's worth the time to drive over and explore.
